Let’s Get Ready, Together

As the humidity rises and clouds build over the ranges, we are reminded how quickly life in Cairns can change. One day we are strolling along the Esplanade or relaxing on the deck, the next we are securing outdoor furniture and checking the radar.

It is part of life in the tropics, something every Cairns local understands. But even for those of us who have weathered many wet seasons, it is easy to forget how powerful nature can be and how much difference a little preparation makes.

That is what Get Ready Queensland Week, held from 6 to 12 October, is all about. It is not just a campaign. It is a reminder for every household, family and neighbour to take small, practical steps that protect the people we love.

On Saturday 11 October, the Esplanade came alive for the Get Ready Emergency Services Day, hosted by our Local Disaster Management Group. Children climbed through fire trucks while parents chatted with SES volunteers and first responders. Beneath the laughter and the sausage sizzle was a serious message: when we prepare, we protect.

As Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, I have seen how quickly a storm can test a community and how much stronger we are when we plan ahead. Disaster preparedness is not just for families with children. It is for everyone: retirees, single people, newcomers and lifelong locals.

We all share the same risks of storm surge, flooding and cyclones, and we all share the same responsibility to be ready. Checking your insurance, creating an emergency plan and packing a kit is not overreacting. It is caring for yourself, for your neighbours and for the people who may one day need your help.

If you are not sure where to start, visit the Cairns Disaster Dashboard for local updates or the Get Ready Queensland website for simple checklists.

Being prepared does not just make a disaster less frightening. It makes recovery faster and safer. Knowing where you will go, what you will need and who you will check on can make all the difference.

Cairns is one of the most resilient communities in Australia. We have proven that time and again through cyclones, floods and the recovery that follows. We look out for one another.

So please, take a few moments this week to sit down with your family, your housemates or even just yourself and get ready. Together we can make this wet season safer for everyone.
