Great to see so much progress on Cairns’ largest-ever infrastructure project.
I’ve been out on site at the Cairns Water Security Stage 1 project a couple of times in recent weeks, checking in on the huge body of work required to secure our water supply for decades to come.
In January, we successfully secured an additional $87.5 million from the Federal Government.
Announced by Water Minister Tanya Plibersek, this extra funding boost will take significant financial pressure off our ratepayers.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Federal and State Governments for their substantial support.
When completed, this infrastructure will provide critical resilience to our growing city, meeting the needs of our expanding population by supplying an additional 6.4 gigalitres of water annually – around 25% of our current usage.
The project involves building:
- A water intake at the Mulgrave River, near the Desmond Trannore Bridge, Gordonvale;
- A water treatment plant and water reservoirs, on Council land located on Draper Road/Hickling Access, Gordonvale;
- A network of pipes to take raw water to the treatment plant and treated water from the plant to residents.
This is just the start of big things for Cairns across infrastructure, housing, and our economy and over the next few years. Watch this space.
